As this course may not be suitable for all applicants, you will be asked to fill in a form with information about yourself. The course leader will also speak with you by phone. We may ask you to attend an orientation session before the course starts. During the orientation session, you are welcome to ask questions about the course, what it will involve, and the potential benefits. We will let you know if you have a place on the course by 5th February 2020.

About this course
This course – for those who have or have had cancer, and for carers- will provide a gentle but comprehensive training in the practice of mindfulness, using meditation, body awareness and simple movement. The approach is experiential, with lots of practice, but also with opportunities to discuss your experience and learn from the teacher and other participants. We will also explore how this practice can be taken into day-to-day life, where it is most needed.
Participants are asked to practise at home for up to 1 hour per day, five days per week.
To support participants after the course ends, we run a Mindfulness Maintenance class monthly at Paul’s Cancer Support Centre. There are also opportunities in London for further classes or practice, and these will be discussed in the last session.
The main practices done in the course are:
● Sitting meditation: mindfulness of the breath, the body, feelings and thoughts
● Mindfulness of movement (stretches and qigong)
● Body awareness through the Body Scan
● Befriending Practice, and
● Mindful Walking.
Research Findings from 8-week Mindfulness courses
Peer-reviewed studies report significant improvements in anxiety, depression, stress, sexual difficulties, immune function and feelings of well-being.
Some points for participants to consider
1) This course introduces the practice of mindfulness through a number of meditation techniques, some of which may be more beneficial to you than others. We encourage participants to try them and stay with those you find most effective, but you will not be required to do any exercise if you prefer not to.
2) Although mindfulness is recommended by healthcare professionals and the evidence for its helpfulness is growing, it is not a replacement for therapy. If you have any concerns, please telephone us or speak to the course leader before the course.
3) If you have a recent diagnosis of cancer and are having cancer treatment, you may find that it is better to participate in a course at a later date. If you have any concerns about this, please raise this before applying.
4) Carers are welcome to participate in this course, ideally with the person they are caring for.
Gary Born has taught at Paul’s Cancer Support Centre since 2007. He has practised meditation for more than 25 years and has personal experience of cancer. Gary completed the teacher training in mindfulness-based approaches in 2006, and later trained to teach Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer. He has taught mindfulness courses for people affected by cancer since 2009.
