My background is in the Health/Pharma industry where I have worked for 32 years for a large UK company, in position of leadership, living in different countries and working worldwide.
I joined Paul’s in 2017, and chose to do so as I was impressed by the idea of caring for people with cancer not only from a medical point of view but with a focus on recovery and well-being. I am pleased to bring my experience to help and support the great work done by all in Paul’s.
I became involved with the Centre because of my admiration for the work that a friend of mine does as a volunteer at the Centre and her passion for the importance of the Centre’s work.
Like most, I’ve experienced the loss of parents, and friends due to cancer. For me, it was (mostly) evident how well they were served by the NHS during their treatment. But it was also painfully evident that professional emotional support and practical advice were in scarce supply. The Centre fills a much-needed gap and its work is inspirational.
For most of my life I’ve worked in the advertising and design field, which included two years as Chairman of Interbrand, the international brand consultancy.
My background is in finance and I am a Chartered Accountant. I joined Paul’s in 2003 as a Trustee.
The Centre does fantastic work for all those who use its services and the personal testimonials which are on the website demonstrate this very clearly.

I am so grateful for the amazing help I received as a client at Paul’s. I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in July 2013 and followed the whole of the Healing Journey course. This made a huge impact on me and has helped me use my cancer experience to transform my life.
I strongly believe that the services that Paul’s offers should be available to more people, carers and families. I particularly admire the way in which Paul’s recognises that people need ongoing support after their treatment has finished. I would like to be part of extending these important services and developing sustainable funding streams.
I spent most of my career as a lawyer working in one of the leading international law firms in the City of London. For the last 7 years of that time, I was the senior partner of the firm.
Since retiring from the law firm, I have taken on a variety of roles. These roles include Deputy Chairman of one of the leading international strategic advisory companies based in London and non-executive director of various companies. I am also a member of the Development Committee of the National Gallery and a Senior Adviser to Chatham House.
I have lived in Wandsworth for over 30 years. I first came into contact with the Centre through the work which my wife, Caroline, did for over 15 years – and, during my time as a lawyer, the law firm provided facilities to the Centre for its annual strategy review.
The Centre provides a unique service – both in the services which it provides and the quality of those services. The need for the Centre’s services in Wandsworth is clear – and it is a need which increases as the survival rates for many types of cancer thankfully rise. I was delighted to be asked to become a Trustee in 2009.
My association with the Centre has been a long one as I first arrived as a service user in 1990 following my own diagnosis and treatment for locally advanced breast cancer. It was here that I learnt of the extraordinary power that skilful, sensitive support can have in helping you to find the courage and strength to confront what is happening to you and to transform such a turbulent and potentially catastrophic experience into one where you can learn to live with it, with all its uncertainties, and to find a creative way forward that is right for you.
I was on the Board of the Centre for a few years, including a three year term as Chair, before returning as a Trustee more recently. I was also a Board member of the national charity, Breast Cancer Care for thirteen years and was Chair for six years until retiring in 2008.
My background was originally in the performing arts and education but I now work on Breast Cancer Care’s helpline which provides support and information throughout the UK.
Judith joined Paul’s as a Trustee in January 2019
I began my career in the NHS, working in the radiotherapy and nuclear medicine departments of two London training hospitals, before moving to the oil industry where I specialised in the chemical analysis of crude oil.
After having children I trained as a teacher and taught in both the private and state sector and in special schools, as well lecturing on university courses, and running my own educational consultancy. After retiring from education I retrained as a garden designer, and currently run my own landscape and garden design business, dividing my time between the UK and France.
I have been involved in health and educational charities for more than 30 years. I was a founder member of BLISS, a thriving neonatal charity, and have been a trustee of various educational charities. My interest in cancer stems from my work in the field, and, as I live in Wandsworth, I am proud to have been supporting the innovative and inspirational work of Paul’s Cancer Support Centre for over 25 years.
Beverley Van Der Molen
A nurse by background, I started specialising in cancer care at The Royal Marsden over twenty five years ago. I was one of the first Macmillan Cancer Information Officers, setting up and providing a community-based information service for people affected by cancer at Paul’s Centre in 1995. In 2008, I worked jointly between the Centre and St George’s Hospital, where I established the Macmillan Information and Support Centre.
Providing the right information and support to help people with cancer and their families deal effectively with the illness has always been central to my roles. This has led to producing and providing information resources, and publications on the provision of information and patient education.
Up until my recent retirement, in December 2018, I worked at St George’s Hospital as a Macmillan Patient and Public Involvement Co-ordinator.
I am delighted to continue my involvement with Paul’s as a Trustee, to help ensure that the Centre continues to provide invaluable support and services.
My background is in finance and business consulting, with a strong focus on restructuring and change management. I joined the Centre as a trustee just over 20 years ago, through Business in the Community, which works to link people working in finance and law with charities needing new trustees.
I chose the Centre as I live in Wandsworth and wanted to work with a local charity and because I was very impressed from the outset with the wonderful and innovative work being done by the then Director, Petra Griffiths, and all the team to support people living with cancer. This impression hasn’t left me and I feel very privileged to have been part of the Centre for so long.
My involvement with the Centre has led me towards other parts of the health sector: having been a non-executive director of Wandsworth PCT from 2007 to 2010, I am now a non-executive director at St George’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
