Season’s greetings

In January we wish a fond farewell to Marisca Ribeiro, our Head of Services, and thank her for everything she has done in her five years with Paul’s. We also welcome Katy Cox as Interim Chief Executive who will work with the Board of Trustees on our future strategy and support recruitment of a permanent Chief Executive.

Thank you to everyone who made 2019 such a great year

Paul’s wouldn’t be Paul’s without the wonderful people who support us. A big thank you to all our staff, volunteers, funders and supporters.

Valuing our volunteers - Simon’s story

Simon Bragman is a new volunteer with the Home Visiting Service:
"I just finished the brilliant training course and will start as a Befriender soon. I got the idea after my wife introduced me to a member of the Board at Paul’s and I was intrigued. I had throat cancer myself a few years ago. My diagnosis was a shock as I felt really well. Even when I lost my voice I wasn’t worried and it wasn’t until I went on holiday, fell off a jetski and then couldn’t shout for help that I decided to go to the doctor’s. My treatment was really tough but I am ok now.

Being a Befriender really appealed to me because even in hospital I was asking – how can I support other people with cancer? The role was screaming out to me as I even try to offer that support to people outside of Paul’s. I am 56 now – so I think my experience will enable me to bring something to the table. I loved the training and talking a lot to the mix of people on the course. I also try to do a lot of volunteering including with refugees.”

Thank you to our fundraisers
2019 saw a vast number of different ways to raise money

  • Thank you to Malcolm Green, Simon Jones and Liz Aram for organising the highly successful golf day at Wimbledon Royal Golf Club.
  • A special thanks to our volunteers Maria Black, and Colette Parham who not only give their time for free as practitioners but also do amazing fundraising work.
  • Thank you to our sponsors Douglas & Gordon, Kerena Richards and our team of volunteers who made the carol concert possible.
  • A huge thank you to our corporate supporters: Primark Tottenham Court Road, Palace Gate Lettings, and the local branches of Coop, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s.

Spotlight on our services

Cancer and Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Habits
with Meredy Birdi and Marcelle Dubrel

This programme which started in October is going very well and participants who attended the first three workshops have given us great feedback.
  • “Thank you for the recipes, they are simple and tasty and given me back my confidence to cook!”
  • “I love the how to drink more water suggestions”
  • “I am much more aware of my sugar intake”
  • “I am reading food labels”.
At each session there is a round table Q&A for symptom management. The workshops offer a chance to get personal support from our experts, and include a mix of nutrition guidance and coaching support, designed to empower participants to look at their habits.
The remaining workshops are taking place at Paul's, 10:30 to 12:30 on the following dates:
  • Session 5: Friday 17th Jan 2020
  • Session 6: Friday 7th Feb 2020
Each workshop stands on its own, includes revision, and you are welcome to join us for one or more of the remaining sessions.
If you are feeling curious and interested, we would love to meet and support you. Please contact Paul's to reserve your place.

Looking forward to 2020

Services to look out for next year

  • The next 8-week mindfulness course starting on 11th February 2020
  • The next workshop is on 26th March 2020 and the topic will be ‘better sleep’. Please contact Angela to book your place.

Support Rosie who is running in the London Marathon next year!

Rosie first walked through the door of Paul's in the run up to Christmas 2017, shortly after she was diagnosed with leukaemia (CML).
As she says:
"My diagnosis came out of the blue. It's simply not possible to overstate how much Paul's helped me at one of the times in my life when I most needed support. Now it's my chance to give something back."

Her fundraising page is on Virgin Money Giving "Rosie Fowler London Marathon for Paul's Cancer Support". Donations can also be sent directly to Paul's office.
